WILL SMITH says he passed on "Django Unchained" because Django wasn't the LEAD CHARACTER.
Even though CHRISTOPH WALTZ only won the Best SUPPORTING Actor Oscar, Will felt his character, Dr. King Schultz, was the real lead . . . especially because he got to kill the main villain, LEONARDO DICAPRIO'S character.
Will says, quote, "Django wasn't the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!"
Before quitting the movie, Will tried to plead with director QUENTIN TARANTINO to change the script. He says, quote, "I was like, 'No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!'"
Still, he's trying to be diplomatic about it. He says, quote, "I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me."
